Geography

Location: Central Asia, north of Af­ghanistan. Area: 447,400 sq. km. Principal cities: Toshkent, Samarkand, Namangan, Andijon, Nukus, and Bukhara. Tourist attractions: Bukhara, Khiva, and Moynaq. Time zone: GMT+5 hours.

People

Population: 27,780.059 (July 2007 est,). Population growth rate:

Elections and election results: The president is elected by popular vote for a seven-year term. Elections were last held on 9 January 2000 and the next elections are scheduled to be held in December 2007. Legislative branch: Uzbekistan has a unicameral Supreme Assembly or Oliy Majlis. Judicial branch: Supreme court.
