In many parts of India, there was a horrible tradition called “Sati sahagamanam”, which means, if a person dies, his wife (or wives in the case of kings) was also cremated by keeping her on the funeral fire, along with the dead body of her husband.

Raja Ram Mohan Ray, a noted social reformer, took initiative in this regard and fought sincerely, legally with the fundamentalists and also by undergoing life-threatening troubles to his life from the opponents. Finally he was able to convince the then British rulers with his knowledgeable arguments.

That horrible tradition “Sati” was abolished by the then governor general of India, viz; Lord William Bentinck in the year 1829-30 AD.
