Slapped Cheek Disease

This disease manifests itself in the form of a red rash on the cheeks which later spreads to other parts of the body. The redness on the cheeks gives an appearance of having been slapped, hence the name. In the late nineteenth century this disease was the fifth on the list of common disease that affected children so the name fifth disease. The first four diseases were measles, mumps, German measles and chicken pox. A virus called parvovirus causes the fifth disease.
