Location: Eastern Asia, northern half of the Korean Peninsula bordering the Korea Bay and the Sea of Japan, be­tween China and South Korea. Area: 120,540 sq. km. Principal cities: P'yOngyang, Ch'Ongjin, Namp'o, Sinmiju, WOnsan, and KaesOng. Tour­ist attractions: Myohyangsan, Paekdusan and Panmunjeom. Time zone: GMT+9 hours.

Executive branch: Chief of state: Kim Jong-il (since July 1994). The late leader Kim ll-sung is now referred to as the 'Eternal President' of the country. Head of government: Premier Kim Yong-il (since I ! April 2007). Elections and election results: The Supreme People's Assembly elects the premier. The last elections were held in September 2003. Legislative branch: North Korea has a uni-cameral Supreme People's Assembly or Ch'oego Inmin Hoeui. It has 687 seats and members are elected by popular vote to serve five-year terms.
