Clay was the very first material to be used for making a spoon. A search for a more durable material led to spoons being fashioned out of bones and wood. The wooden ones are in use even today. Egyptians turned out spoons made with bronze. These had an added feature – spike ends to facilitate certain actions. These were undoubtedly the forerunners of forks. The Greeks and the Romans added spoons made of silver and these too are used even today. Some spoons made by the Romans had holes drilled into them. Spoons were honored with specific ceremonial functions too!
