Do you think school bags are heavy nowadays? What then would you say to the use of notebooks in the form of small wax-coated wooden tablets? School students used these in the 1st Century AD in Rome. ‘Pens’ consisted of styluses that were made of metal or bone. Writing was done with the sharp end of the stylus and whenever anything needed to be erased, the blunt end was used for the purpose. Whenever permanent records were needed, papyrus was used. The ‘pen’ in this case would be a reed with a pointed end that was dipped in ink.
