From Which Country Equater PassAdded on:9/30/2009 12:51:48 PM In Physical Geography | By: modi | Viewed: times |
The equator passes through a relatively small number of countries. The 10(degrees) line of latitude 1,000 kilometres to the north manages to pass through more than 20, whereas for the equator it is a mere 12. This gives an indication of the difference in the proportion of landmass that lies in the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
The Asian mainland doesn't extend far enough to the south for the equator to cross it, so the countries that lie on the line are concentrated in Africa, South America and the island chains of the Pacific and Indian oceans.
In South America, the equator crosses Ecuador (below)--which was named after the line by its Spanish colonists--Colombia and the northern part of Brazil, close to the Amazon Basin. In Africa, the line passes through Gabon, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo, before moving on to Uganda, Kenya and the southern tip of Somalia.
