Connection Between Volcanoes And Acid rainAdded on:2/7/2008 10:26:19 PM In Geography | By: Nicky Status | Viewed: 160 times | Rated by 1 users
The best connection I know of occurs downwind of actively fuming volcanoes, such as Kilauea here in Hawai'i. Kilauea produces a couple thousand tons of sulfur dioxide gas every day. This sulfur dioxide reacts with moisture in the atmosphere to form tiny droplets (called aerosols) of sulfuric acid. These aerosols are small enough to drift with the wind. When it rains, the rainwater picks up these aerosols and becomes acidified.
