You owe the existence of the cuddly teddy bear to the U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt. Once when he was on a hunting trip, the president who was also known as Teddy (short for Theodore) Roosevelt refused to shoot a stray bear cub. This story was of course well retold in the newspapers soon after. With cartoons of the event making a splash everywhere, toy-makers began making soft and lovable stuffed bears and dubbed them `teddy bears.’ Little would have Roosevelt imagined when he did the good deed what a universally and timelessly loved entity he was going to help create.
